About ScanSpeed.in
Free, accurate internet speed testing for India — no apps, no signup, no nonsense.
How the Test Works
Ping & Jitter
We send 12 lightweight HEAD requests to our server and measure round-trip time. The top 15% of outlier readings are discarded. Jitter is calculated as the mean deviation between consecutive samples — this is the ITU-T G.107 standard method used by professional network tools.
Download Speed
We run 4 parallel download streams simultaneously, each fetching 2 MB chunks. Parallel streams are essential to saturate high-speed connections — a single stream can't fill a 100 Mbps+ link. A warm-up request is made first to establish the TCP connection and avoid a cold-start penalty. We then compute a trimmed mean of per-chunk throughput, dropping the bottom and top 10% to eliminate burst anomalies.
Upload Speed
Three parallel POST streams send 1 MB payloads of non-compressible data to our server. We measure time from send to server acknowledgement. The payload uses a non-repeating pattern so network compression doesn't artificially inflate results. Results are trimmed the same way as download.
VPN & Proxy Detection
We check your IP address against ip-api.com's database of known datacenter, hosting, and proxy IP ranges. If you are on a VPN or corporate proxy, we display a warning since your speed results reflect the VPN endpoint's connection, not your home ISP speed. We do not store your IP address.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my ScanSpeed result different from my ISP's advertised speed?
ISPs advertise "up to" speeds which represent ideal conditions. Real-world speeds depend on network congestion, Wi-Fi signal quality, your router, the number of devices connected, and distance from the exchange. Run the test on a wired Ethernet connection for the most accurate result.
Why does my speed look different from Speedtest.net?
Different tools use different server locations, testing methodologies, and numbers of parallel streams. ScanSpeed uses 4 parallel download streams and 3 upload streams, which more accurately reflects real-world conditions for modern broadband. Server distance from you also matters — we try to use the nearest available server.
Does the test store my data?
Your test results are stored only in your browser's localStorage — they never leave your device. We do not log your IP address, results, or any personally identifiable information on our servers. The only external call is to ip-api.com for ISP/VPN detection.
How much data does the test use?
Each full test (ping + download + upload) uses approximately 40–150 MB depending on your connection speed. Faster connections download more data in the same test window. We recommend running the test when not on a metered or limited mobile data plan.
What is a good internet speed in India?
TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) considers 25 Mbps as the minimum for "broadband" as of 2024. For a household with multiple users streaming and working from home, 100 Mbps+ download is comfortable. For gaming and video calls, ping under 30 ms matters more than raw speed.
Why is my ping high even though my speed is fast?
Speed and latency are independent. You can have a 500 Mbps connection with 80 ms ping if your ISP routes traffic inefficiently, or if you are far from the test server. High ping on a fast connection often indicates ISP routing issues or a congested backbone. Contact your ISP if ping consistently exceeds 50 ms on a wired connection.
I see "VPN Detected" but I am not using a VPN. Why?
Some ISPs, universities, and corporate networks route traffic through datacenters or proxy servers that appear as VPN/hosting IPs in IP databases. If you are on a university Wi-Fi, office network, or a shared/reseller ISP, this can happen. The detection is based on IP reputation data and is not 100% accurate.
